Sebastian L. Moore, MBA

Navy Vet, Father, Husband, Gardner, Chief Soul Officer.

I began gardening as a child with my grandmother in Newport, RI. I was enthralled by her knowledge and experience; captivated by her stories of gardening on Smith Hill in Providence, RI with her mother during the Great Depression. She would share stories of the ragman coming by on his horse drawn carriage and her mother shouting "Esther!! Get the shovel and get the horse manure. It's good for the garden".

I vividly remember the warm spring mornings we shared together. Cousins, uncles and aunts would come from near and far to help bring the vision of her perfect tiny garden to life. We dug, pulled up weeds, tilled, added fresh garden soil, and put the baby flower and veggie plants into the supple spring soil. She used to lament that her friends would tease her as she grabbed her shovel to retrieve the free "black gold" left over by the horse carrying the ragman. Today, I'm sure she would wish there was still a rag man coming along leaving fresh fertilizer in his wake.

Throughout the summer we would water, weed and wait (not so patiently at times) to reap the bounty of our hard-earned harvest. Some years it was Boom and others were Bust; One thing was always constant - together we created something beautiful that had the capacity to nourish our bodies and (although not realized at the time) through our labor we fed our souls.

We learned, we experimented, we debated, we were patient, we experienced the wonders of nature, and I gained the confidence and comfort knowing I had and will always have some assemblance of self-reliance.

This is what we want to share with you!

You CAN grow your own food! Your harvest (however small or large) will have left you with a few things that are irreplaceable:
